Josiah was a strong Protestant who would stress on God for the reason to expand. He wanted to end all racial conflict and was notably racist, even though he would talk about the dominance of the Anglo Saxon race, which had to do with English speaking people. He wrote the book Our Country: Its Possible Future and Its Present Crisis which would explain his views on the world and what needs to be done in order for maximum potential. He would proclaim social injustices and was very collective on dealing with them to make the world a better place. Strong would say that civic liberty and spiritual Christianity are the greatest reasons for expansion and progression. He believed that America was the greatest country in the world and had the responsibility to give to the world and keep things in order for peace and no social injustices. So he was very supportive of the annexation of Philippines for he thought they couldn’t govern themselves and the tropics were valuable.

Reasons
  1. Anglo Saxon race (All English Speaking people) will be the dominating race for God and the world. They have been increasing by the millions and tens of millions in the last few centuries so we have that fact to follow. The Anglo Saxon Race excels at pushing into new countries and land. They maintain energy because of its advantages in America, the country that is best for holding the Anglo Saxon race. They were the future; all other races will dwindle while this one remains.
  2. It is a need for all men to be granted the spiritual Christianity. He believed it was important to introduce Christianity to foreigners.
  3. Increasing strength of modern times. America is very privileged and has great people that emigrated here from Europe and the country of the United States is on a better front than other countries. It is survival of the fittest that we expand everywhere. Very nationalistic view, that America was the great country for the world and had the Darwinian attitude of “Survival of the Fittest” to be great and help other countries.
  4. The tropics were the necessary territories to have for economic purposes.
  5. America had material gain over much of the world and could use it to help others.
  6. Philippines cannot govern themselves.
